Gregory Singer - About the Author

Gregory Singer

I am Gregory Singer, allow me to introduce myself.

I was born on the southeast coast of Texas at Corpus Christie. My father was a wonderful violinist and symphony orchestra conductor. My mother was a concert pianist. They both had an absolute passion for music. I remember, even as a baby in the crib, gazing transfixed at the artwork hanging above my crib. I also loved to watch the huge oil tankers silently slip by our rented beach house. I still enjoy depicting bridges and boats and seascapes.

I remember my early childhood was spent frolicking in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico at Padre Island. After five idyllic years, I was off to the Pacific Northwest as my family relocated to beautiful Portland, Oregon. My father was appointed conductor of the Portland Symphony. For the next ten years he nurtured it to grow into the Oregon Symphony. My fondest memory of Portland is swaying in the breeze at the very top of either the tall Doulas fur, or Evergreen trees that permeated our yard and neighborhood. The view of the ever-present Mt. Hood and Mt. St Helen was always enthralling.

I had been studying violin with my father since the age of four and after one summer, now in my early teens, attending a summer music camp upstate New York. I was informed by my parents that we were not going back to Portland but joining the hustle and bustle of New York City. Yikes! New York was a scary image for a 14-year-old when the city was very rough. Unfortunately, in Portland, I had hidden baseball glove and most of my favorite toys in a wooden toy chest under the stairs. It had slipped my mind to tell my father who had remained behind to pack up the moving truck heading to New York. Back in New York, I had a lump in my throat when all had been delivered and unloaded a few weeks later, and there was no toy chest. My childhood was officially over.

Soon I joined the Juilliard School of Music and embarked in navigating the subways and streets of the big city, as well as the intense characters known as ‘New Yorkers.’ I began drawing pictures since I was tiny and it is my sanctuary. I should have paid better attention to the schoolteachers, instead of noodling and doodling on my notebook.

I hope you enjoy my artistic evolution that can be viewed at my gallery at GregorySingerArt.com.

p.s. I also play the violin and have become the conductor of the Manhattan Symphonie. (ManhattanSymphonie.com)
